Game Week Begins

Finally it is upon us. The long months of the off season are behind us and we embark on the first game week of the season. It is always a week full of emotion that resonates through the team as players revisit their personal preparation routines, readying themselves for the challenge that the weekend holds. There is a new buzz at practice as players dust off the final cobwebs and comprehend the exciting realisation that they are ready to embark on another gruelling season. There is a sadistic dichotomy about football players. It is the intoxicating thrill that goes hand in hand with five months of physical punishment.

Wolverines are ready to attack the new season.

As I have alluded to previously, this year is slightly different. The presentiment is heightened by the importance of the opening game. There is no room for error. There is no ten-game season. We are in a two-leg elimination game with the reigning Swiss champions and the loser’s European season will be over as quickly as it started. Whatever preparation needs to be done must already be in the books and players must use this final week to build themselves up for the game on Saturday night.

Our practice schedule is packed as we put the final touches on our off-season. Tonight, the defence will be reviewing film. From Tuesday to Thursday, we have our regular practices. Then on Friday we fly to Zurich, where our pre-game begins.

There is a nervousness; there is apprehension. There needs to be. But more importantly, there is a confidence that we have done all we can in order to prepare. There is a belief that we have the strongest Wolverines team that I have seen, that is more than capable of battling with the big boys of European football. I don’t think there is one person who is not itching to get stuck in to the action.

So get behind us readers. Show your support for the Wolverines and we will do Finland and the UK proud.
