A very tough week

Sunday was a tough day for everyone at the Wolverines. Some of our problems were of our own making where others were the unfortunate product of the nature of our sport.

Ten minutes in to our 35-12 loss in Seinajoki, JD collapsed to the turf with pain in his knee while making a cut in a dash to the endzone. He sat out the rest of the game and following a trip to the doctor, we are awaiting an MRI scan on his knee to assess the extent of the damage. Hopefully it will not show any significant injury, but he definitely won’t play again this year.

Also on the casualty list this week is Ben Webb, who will have a scan on his shoulder to assess a suspected dislocation. Despite the pain he was in, he did finish the game, scoring one of our consolation touchdowns at the death. Obviously I wish them both well and will keep you updated as and when news comes in. Fingers crossed.

The game was an altogether disappointing affair from the Wolverines point of view. The Crocodiles game plan worked extremely well against us and we did not seem to have an answer. There were moments when our defence played very well and four touchdowns is certainly not the worst we have performed this year, but our consistency is still the thing that ultimately lets us down.

So now the playoffs begin. We face the Porvoo Butchers in the semi final. The Butchers have won the last five championships in a row and are not to be taken lightly by any means. We beat them 39 – 7 earlier in the season, but that was against a team missing a number of starters. We play on Sunday afternoon at the Helsinki Velodrome. I really hope that everyone will react to the pain of last week’s loss in a positive manner and we take the game to the Butchers this week.
